The Reason for the Season!

reason-seasonThis year, and for the 6th Year now, the Church presented “The Reason for the Season” to local schools.

Adapted from Slough Baptist’s original presentation, the aim is to separate Christmas stuff that’s from the bible from Christmas stuff that’s not. For example one part of the presentation is in the form of a quiz, and one of the questions is:

Where was Jesus Born?

  • a) Stable
  • b) Inn
  • c) Cave

Of course for those of you that know, the answer (to much surprise from the kids attending) is cave. The reason being that Bethlehem was on a hillside and their animals were likely to have been kept in caves, not stables. So if Jesus was wrapped up warm with the animals, he would have been in a cave!

This is the idea, separating new and old additions to the Christmas tradition, from the actuality of the Bible stories. An analogy of “Bubble Gum & Fluff” is used, where the bubble gum is the Bible account of Christmas, and the fluff is the stuff that’s been added on over time. Just like fluff will stick to bubble gum that’s been dropped under a bed or behind a cupboard and left there for some time.

At no time is the fluff described as bad, or wrong in any way. It’s just described as what it is, stuff that’s been added on to the Christmas tradition over the years, but still stuff that we love!

The presentation takes a very lively and interactive form, it’s not just reading from the front. Everyone enjoys this style much more, and it means that more people learn.

Around 20 people took part in the presentation this year, so a big thanks to them. And thanks to the kids and teachers too, it’s also a fun time as well as being informative.
